Mark Lutyens & Catherine FitzGerald
Garden designer, Catherine FitzGerald, and landscape architect, Mark Lutyens head a small practice specialising in designing new gardens and restoring historic ones, in Britain and Ireland. Projects include a new garden with an Arts-and-Crafts feel at a restored 18th-century house in the Derbyshire Dales and softening the terrace of a fine Oxfordshire mansion by adding a naturalistic gravel garden, whilst restoring the Capability Brown parkland beyond. Most recently, works in progress include a new garden at Ballyfin demesne in the Irish Midlands, and the blending of an ecologically designed retreat in the Scottish Highlands with the wild surrounding landscape. Catherine has spent many years developing the gardens at her family home in Co. Limerick, whilst Mark gardens wildly on Exmoor. With a practice that responds keenly to ‘spirit of place’ and seeks to blur the boundaries with what lies beyond, their planting style embraces both naturalism with exuberant romantic plantings, anchored within a bold structure.
